Translucent | Transparent was a material study as part of the Southern California Modernism course. Inspired by the historical practice by designers in Southern California of testing and investigating materials in architecture and installations, the project looks into the properties of different translucent and transparent plastics. Urethane resin was cast into 3D printed PLA molds. The molds were chipped away at to reveal the resin beneath, acting as both mold and surface layer to a deeper glowing solid. The solid is pierced by horizontal sheets of acrylic which shine at their edges creating a contrast between translucent | transparent and solid | void.
